Botanical beauties

I was at the Botanical Gardens in Montreal for the  book launch about the findings from a  project I was part of between 2008 and 2012. My colleagues and I made a quick stop at the greenhouses before the evening’s main event.

Orchids are an amazingly diverse family, second only to the Asters in number of species (over 20 000). Most grow from trees (epiphytes), especially in the Tropics. 51 species are found in Quebec which are all terrestrial.  One genus, Corallorhiza, is parasitic on fungus and usually lacks chlorophyll.
